When I was taking Clinical Psychology yesterday, my Indian classmate casted another hilarious remark to question my professor's attitude towards Sigmund Freud. The Indian girl jumped into a conclusion right off the bat, after my professor made a joke about vindicating or defending Freud's theory of unconscious. She said with a rather brusque tone( I wonder if that's how Indians talk like )" I'm so surprised to see a Cognitive Behavioral therapist like you would defend for Freud". Apparently, Freud was a psycho maniac to her, and the theory of Central Self we all benefit from in terms of capitalism, consumer habit, the establishment of stock market, as well as the notion of expressing the self on the fashion stage. My professor is such a sweet, benevolent lady, I wish I could clone her. She took in her remark in a hilarious way" oh then you should be surprised! As a psychologist, we should study as diverse theories and practices of therapy as possible to better treat our patients and understand their underlying autonomic thoughts as well as core beliefs".
Just as I was wondering how Sigmund Freud, the Jewish decent from Germany, impacted on the human development, I came across this fascinating documentary on the Central Self that I would like to share with you.
A majority of us assume the essence of his theory of the unconsciousness lies in the context of sexual drives and inhibited impulses that will be reflected in our dreams. The truth is far beyond our common premise. The theory of unconsciousness is more of relevance to the sensual responses, sensation, rather than sexual impulses. As a toddler, we all interpreted what was right and wrong, based on the environmental cues, social cues we got from our parents, and other adults. Gradually, we learn to estimate the face value of ourselves with regard to our interaction with others and how people perceive our own behaviors.
Bernay, Freud's nephew, second generation of immigrants in the states, advocated and utilized the theory of the Central Self by applying the theory to study consumer attitude, the pattern of the stock market, start the modern day of consuming culture in America as well as the world, and kick off the establishment of showcasing the glamor of fashionable models with miscellaneous outfits to augment the value of the self. The booming economy in the 1960s should be part of Freud's tribute, even though Freud had animosity towards America and refused to seek for refugee in the states, ensuing the second World War that unleashed the growing antisemitism towards the Jews across Europe.
With the understanding of the self, we enable ourselves to amplify the self-worth, confidence and self-esteem that will help us set up for future success when interacting with people in social setting.
